The town of Estepona is at the most westerly point of the popular Costa del Sol
area of Spain. It stretches from the sea to the remains of the Castillo de San
Luis and there are many historic ruins to be found in the town and surrounding
area. The village had only twenty-five families at the start of the 16th century
and has steadily grown into a popular tourist location to the present day.
Estepona is the holiday location for many Spanish nationals and so a tourist in
Estepona can enjoy all the modern tourist necessities, whilst still being able
to take in the rustic charm of this authentic Spanish town.
Main Tourist Attractions
Although controversial with many foreigners, the bullring in Estepona is still
worth a visit. It has interesting architecture and is home to four museums,
namely a bullfighting museum, an archaeological museum, a fossil museum and a
local agriculture museum. The bullring has about sixteen fights per year and is
used to stage concerts in between times. With a long stretch containing several
beaches, Estepona is also popular for watersports, diving and relaxing in the
sun. There are also historic watchtowers, several of which are within walking
distance of the beaches and date back to the time of the Moors. There is a
beautifully maintained golf course for keen golfers and plenty of parks and
green spaces to relax in.
Shopping Opportunities
Due to the rustic charm of the town, you will find many quaint boutiques and
authentic shops in the narrow streets, all offering various ethnic items to take
home as souvenirs. If you are looking for a modern shopping experience, these
types of shops can be found primarily in the Calle Real and the Calle Terraza
areas. Estepona also has several markets which are held on a Wednesday in the
town and on Sundays at the marina. You will find a range of leather goods,
jewellery, watches, arts and crafts, food and clothing at great prices.
Eating out and Nightlife
With so many Spanish people making Estepona their destination for a holiday,
there are plenty of opportunities to sample authentic Spanish food. Tapas bars
can be found strewn through the narrow cobbled streets and many cafes and
restaurants serve seafood, including the local sardine speciality, esparto de
sardines. A lot of good quality restaurants can be found along the seafront and
international cuisine can be found here to; ranging from English to French.
Estepona is not known for its nightclub lifestyle and so if wandering the
narrow, authentic streets and sitting down to some wonderful seafood and wine is
your idea of heaven, then this is the location for you. If you do enjoy a bit of
clubbing, there are some discos and bars to be found in the marina area of the
town.
