Alhaurin El Grande is a small village located in the south-east of the Malaga
Province. It is surrounded by forest and has a long history dating back to the
Neolithic period. It survived many invasions through the years, including
occupation by the Romans and the Moors. It is stated that the village and
surrounding area were blessed by the gods due to the fertile soil and abundance
of mineral deposits. The village was subjected to an earthquake in 1680.
Main Tourist Attractions
The village is a great base for walkers as there are several woodland trails and
mountains to be explored in the immediate vicinity. For history buffs, Alhaurin
El Grande has a lot to offer due to its rich history. There are remains of the
local Roman villas to explore as well as the Roman Baths, known locally as Las
Bovedas, which means “the domes”. The origins of the baths are unknown but are
believed to have been a part of the Roman town of Silniana, which was destroyed
by an earthquake in 365 A.D. There are also the remains of the fort on the hill
which was constructed when the Moors invaded the village. In the surrounding
area of the village you will find the basilica Vega del Mar, a unique Paleo-Christian
construction with the ruins of a necropolis nearby. For keen golfers the village
has its own Golf and Country Club.
Shopping Opportunities
One of the best places for shopping in Alhaurin El Grande is the Avenida Ricardo
Soranio. It is named after one of the men responsible for bringing tourism and
private industry to the
Marbella region in the 1950’s. This avenue is extensive
and seems to go on for miles. It is accessible by foot or car and there are many
boutiques, cafes, restaurants and ethnic shops to be visited here. It is a truly
unique shopping experience, unlike other areas that attract the tourists.
Eating out and Nightlife
There is an abundance of restaurants and cafés to be explored in Alhaurin El
Grande. They mainly serve traditional Spanish food such as chorizo sausage,
paellas and tortillas, but some international food is offered. Tapas is a very
popular dish in the cafés and restaurants in this village. There is also a great
selection of Spanish wine available which is pleasant to drink and cheap to buy.
The nightlife in Alhaurin El Grande is very subdued and quiet, compared to other
tourists spots in the area. Nights can be spent wandering the quaint streets of
the village and whiling the night away in authentic Spanish bars and
restaurants.
